Geography

Intent

At Bampton CE Primary School we plan to allow for coverage of the Geography National Curriculum content using Kapow Primary units of work which are then adapted to meet the needs of our children.

Kapow Primary’s Geography scheme of work aims to inspire pupils to become curious and explorative thinkers with a diverse knowledge of the world – in other words, to think like geographers. The intention is for pupils to develop the confidence to question and observe places, measure and record necessary data in a variety of ways and analyse and present their findings. The scheme aims to build an awareness of how Geography shapes lives at multiple scales and over time. The hope is to encourage pupils to become resourceful, active citizens who will have the skills to contribute to and improve the world around them.

Implementation

Geography is taught in alternate half-terms (alternating with History units of work) and is usually delivered in weekly lessons, although sometimes time is blocked to allow field work to take place.

In school, we have a variety of resources to support the teaching and learning of Geography, including our school grounds and local environment. We also plan trips and visitors linked to our different units to enrich and deepen children’s learning experiences.

Impact

Kapow Primary Geography lessons include ongoing assessment opportunities, such as questioning, retrieval practice and interactive activities. These enable teachers to assess understanding in real time and adapt their teaching accordingly. Teachers make summative judgements against the end of unit outcomes for each child which are recorded on the school tracking system at the end of the year for reporting to parents.
