Computing

Intent

At Bampton CE Primary School we teach computing using the Kapow scheme of work which meets National Curriculum expectations. Kapow Primary’s Computing scheme of work aims to inspire pupils to become curious and explorative thinkers with a diverse knowledge of the world – in other words, to think like computing experts. The intention is for pupils to develop the confidence to question and observe places, measure and record necessary data in a variety of ways and analyse and present their findings. The scheme aims to build an awareness of how computing shapes lives at multiple scales and over time. The hope is to encourage pupils to become resourceful, active citizens who will have the skills to contribute to and improve the world around them.

Implementation

The computing units are usually delivered in weekly lessons along with other opportunities to use information technology to support cross-curricular learning.

Computing across the curriculum

Computing skills and technology are also used for purposeful cross-curricular work, such as producing a typed document, researching aspects of history, collecting images etc.

Teaching children how to stay safe online is an important part of our computing curriculum and links with our PSHE curriculum. Each year we use Safer Internet Day to focus on the theme for the year and reinforce key online safety messages. It is important that Parents and Carers also know how to keep their children safe online. There are further links to resources on our Parents Page but below are some documents which may be helpful.

You can report online abuse via this link https://www.ceop.police.uk/safety-centre/

CEOP (Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre) is supported by experienced Child Protection Advisors who can ensure children get the right support they need.

Impact

Kapow Primary Computing lessons include ongoing assessment opportunities, such as questioning, retrieval practice and interactive activities. These enable teachers to assess understanding in real time and adapt their teaching accordingly. Summative assessments for each child are made against unit outcomes and recorded on the school tracking system at the end of each year to report to parents.
