National Curriculum requirements for Key stage 2: Foreign language

Teaching may be of any modern or ancient foreign language and should focus on enabling pupils to make substantial progress in one language. The teaching should provide an appropriate balance of spoken and written language and should lay the foundations for further foreign language teaching at key stage 3. It should enable pupils to understand and communicate ideas, facts and feelings in speech and writing, focused on familiar and routine matters, using their knowledge of phonology, grammatical structures and vocabulary.

FRENCH

At Bampton CE primary School we teach our Key Stage Two children French using the Kapow scheme of work. 

Intent

Kapow Primary’s French scheme of work aims to inspire pupils to become curious, confident and enthusiastic language learners with a broad understanding of the French language and culture; in other words, to think and communicate like linguists. The intention is for pupils to develop the skills to listen, speak, read and write in French, while building the confidence to express themselves and explore new ways of thinking through language learning. The scheme is designed to develop pupils’ understanding of how learning another language connects people, cultures, and communities worldwide. The aim is to encourage pupils to become open-minded, active citizens who can appreciate diversity and engage meaningfully with the wider world.

Implementation

French units are taught through weekly lessons. A range of practical resources support the learning of French so it is hands-on and fun. In Year 4 children take part in a Burford Partnership Languages Day led by the Modern Foreign Languages staff at Burford Secondary School.

Impact

Teachers assess children against the end of unit outcomes and record a summative assessment on the school tracking system which is reported to parents at the end of the year.
