Intent

At Bampton CE Primary School we use Kapow Primary to plan units of work allowing for coverage of the History curriculum content and to develop children’s awareness of chronology. These units are then adapted to meet the needs of our children. 

Kapow Primary’s History scheme of work aims to inspire pupils to become curious and analytical thinkers with a broad understanding of the past – in other words, to think like historians. The intention is for pupils to develop the confidence to question and investigate evidence, explore different perspectives and build informed interpretations of events, people and societies.The scheme aims to build pupils’ awareness of how History shapes identities, cultures and communities over time. The goal is to inspire them to become reflective, active citizens who can draw on historical understanding to make sense of the present and contribute thoughtfully to the future.

Implementation

History units are taught in alternate half-terms (alternating with Geography) and are usually delivered in weekly lessons. Sometimes curriculum time is blocked to give time for field trips and time to explore aspects of learning in more depth. Trips to historical places of interest and workshops are planned and used to bring history learning to life. For example, the local museum has a loan service and runs workshops to help children explore artefacts and be history detectives. The Bampton Archive is a helpful source of local history information and Bampton residents support children when undertaking history studies. 

Impact

Kapow Primary History lessons include ongoing assessment opportunities, such as questioning, retrieval practice and interactive activities. These enable teachers to assess understanding in real time and adapt their teaching accordingly. Pupils demonstrate their learning and provide tangible evidence of progress through a variety of activities, including structured written work, annotated diagrams and creative responses. Summative assessments for each child against the end of each unit of work and entered into the school tracking system at the end of each year to report to parents.
