Science

Intent

At Bampton CE Priamry School we believe in making scientific learning active and engaging. We follow the Kapow scheme of work to deliver the National Curriculum expectations. Kapow Primary’s Science scheme of work aims to inspire pupils to become curious, inquisitive and analytical thinkers with a broad understanding of the natural world – in other words, to think like scientists. The intention is for pupils to develop the confidence to ask questions, make observations, carry out investigations, record data in a variety of ways and analyse and present their findings.

Implementation

The subject knowledge content and the working scientifically skills are set out for each year group. Teaching and learning is supported by relevant trips, visits, visitors and workshops to enhance and deepen children’s understanding and skills. Teaching and learning is usually delivered through weekly lessons. Sometimes curriculum time is blocked to allow more time to explore concepts in depth.

Impact

Kapow Primary Science lessons include ongoing assessment opportunities, such as questioning, retrieval practice and interactive activities. These enable teachers to assess understanding in real time and adapt their teaching accordingly.

Pupils demonstrate their learning and provide tangible evidence of progress through a variety of activities, including structured written work, annotated diagrams and creative responses.

The teacher assessment is made against learning objectives for each unit of work. A summative assessment is supported by end of unit tests where appropriate. A termly teacher summative assessment is recorded on the school tracking system. Attainment in science is reviewed by leaders.
