How do we support children?

At Bampton CE Primary School, we aim to value each child as an individual. With care and support, we will encourage each child to achieve their own potential and to establish areas in which they can succeed. We acknowledge that everyone in life is not the same, but we all have the right to be accepted. We encourage everyone to work alongside each other in a harmonious and supportive way.

Many children will have special needs at some time during their school career and may require some additional support, however temporary. We plan to be as supportive as possible when catering for Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).

What are Special Education Needs and Disabilities?

The SEN Code of Practise recognises 4 broad areas of SEND:

  • Communication and Interaction (includes speech/language, autistic spectrum)
  • Cognitive and learning (includes dyslexia)
  • Behaviour, emotion and social development
  • Sensory/physical needs (includes vision and hearing impaired)

How do we help support?

Our teachers have the expertise to teach children of all abilities. Where appropriate, staff are willing to undergo specialised training in order to meet the specific needs of an individual pupil.

The involvement of parents, when there is a concern about their child, is immediate. Parents are encouraged to discuss any concerns with their child’s class teacher. Parents are involved identifying their child’s special education needs and are continually part of the review and monitoring proccess.

Children will be given help to support their needs after discussions with their parents.

Parents can speak to any member of staff in school confidentially.
Any concerns raised by the Class teacher are monitored by the school; if further assessments by outside agencies are required, then this will be discussed with parents before referral.
Parents will be informed regularly on their child’s needs and progress.

What can I do?

The school uses the County Guidance and Assessment Forms as a record for identification, assessment and provision. The class teacher is primarily responsible for identifying children with special educational needs. Initial concerns should be shared with parents and colleague including the SENCO/INCo.

  • You can speak to any member of staff in school confidentially.
  • You are welcome to bring along a friend if you wish.
  • A member of staff may speak to you about any problems or concerns about your child.
  • Any concerns are raised and monitored by the class teacher; children may need further assessments by outside agencies which we will discuss with you.
  • Children will be given goals to help support their needs. These will be discussed with you.
  • Please ask for any suggestions of how you can support your child at home.

Partnership Within and Beyond the School

The general ethos of our school is to welcome the sharing of expertise. Our SENCO attends termly area SENCO meetings and Buford Partnership SENCO Support Group Meetings.
